As mobile techonology, and more specifically the smartphone, has taken over many parts of our lives, it is also dominating the travel planning world. Over the past 40 years, the industry moved from being strictly in the hands of travel companies to being in the control of the traveler.
In just one decade from 1992, the number of full-time travel agents dropped from more than 90,000 to 60,000, according to USA Today. In more recent years, however, revenue has increased in the travel industry, with travel agents and travel companies seeing more action.
In a study by TripAdvisor, 60 percent of mobile users surveyed had downloaded and used travel applications. More than 40 percent had used the apps for trip planning and during their trip for reasons other than calling.
Yelp, TripIt, Travefy, TripCase, OpenTable, MenuPages, Kayak Pro, Hotwire, Hipmunk, and Gate Guru were some of 2015's best travel apps.
